HC Deb 26 July 1923 vol 167 c707
67. Mr. HANNON

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he can state the amount due to the Treasury from the Republic of Argentina on account of the exchange difference between the sum of 50 million dollars, advanced by this country on account of the Argentine debt to the United States, and the amount repaid at par by the Argentine Government in January, 1921; and when, and in what form, this amount will be credited to the Treasury?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

The amount due (as on the 15th June) is 16,243,957 Argentine gold pesos 42 cents. (equivalent to about £2,775,000). The sum due to the Treasury by the Argentine Government will be set-off against a debt of slightly smaller amount due to the Argentine Government by the Treasury-representing the balance of the loan made to this country by the Argentine and the surplus will be paid into the Exchequer. Pending the conclusion of negotiations which are now proceeding between the two Governments, I am unable to say when the accounts will be finally cleared.
