HC Deb 17 July 1923 vol 166 c2045
50. Mr. HANCOCK

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he can give the total number of employés in the Customs and Excise for each year since 1918?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

The total numbers of staff employed in the Customs and Excise Department in each year since 1918 are as follow:

1919 … … 12,204
1920 … … 12,641
1921 … … 12,547
1922* … … 11,456
1923*… … 11,509
*The figures for these years exclude staff in Ireland.
The increase shown in 1923 is due to the inclusion of the new Coast Preventive Force which has taken over part of the work formerly performed by the Coastguard.
