HC Deb 05 July 1923 vol 166 cc607-8
37. Mr. HURD

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he has made any arrangement with the producers under which the consumer is to benefit by the abolition of the tax on cider; what is the nature of the arrangement and has the benefit yet reached the consumer?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

The answer to the first part of the hon. Member's question is in the negative, but I have no reason to believe that the abolition of the Cider Duty has not generally been reflected in reduced prices.

Mr. HURD

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that Members in this House have still to pay for their cider the same price as before the duty was taken off?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

I am afraid that also applies to my ginger beer in this House, but I think it is a matter for the Kitchen Committee.

Mr. HURD

Will not the right hon. Gentlemen ask the manufacturers whether some arrangement cannot be made in order that the benefit may reach the consumer?

Mr. SHEPPERSON

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the charge for cider in Devonshire has been reduced from 6d. to 3d.?

Mr. HURD

That is not this House.

Mr. J. JONES

This is not Devonshire!

Mr. SPEAKER

I think the matter is one for the Kitchen Committee.
