asked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the firm of Messrs. S. Pearson and Son are now engaged in carrying out any works in the Sudan which were originally started under State control; and, if so, why a private firm was brought in to finish them?

In the early part of last year the Sudan Government, being dissatisfied with the progress made by the contractors engaged in building the Blue Nile dam, decided to terminate their contract. The completion of the work was subsequently entrusted to the firm mentioned by the hon. Member.
