HC Deb 04 July 1923 vol 166 c431
48. Captain Viscount EDNAM

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that the institutional staff employed by the Edmonton Board of Guardians has increased since 1914 from 313 to 671; that the cost of salaries has increased from £1,600 to £70,800, although the number of inmates under their care has only increased from 2,163 to 2,318; and whether he is satisfied that this increase in staff and salaries is justifiable, and that no further economies can be effected?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

With the exception of certain principal appointments, the establishment of the guardians and their remuneration is a matter within the guardians' discretion. I am bringing the hon. Member's question to their notice, and will inform him of their reply.

Mr. LANSBURY

Is the figure of £1,600 in the question correct?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

My information is that that figure should be £16,000.
