HC Deb 04 July 1923 vol 166 cc427-8
61. Mr. WELLS

asked the First Commissioner of Works if he will make an order, under the Ancient Monuments Consolidation Amendment Act, 1913, for the preservation of the ruins of great literary and historical interest, known as Houghton Towers, Bedfordshire?

The FIRST COMMISSIONER of WORKS (Sir John Baird)

As the ruins in question have not been recommended by the Ancient Monuments Board to be scheduled under the Act as of national importance, I regret that I do not see my way to issue a Preservation Order, which would have to be confirmed by a Bill in Parliament. I, however, greatly deplore the proposed destruction of such an interesting building.
