HC Deb 18 April 1923 vol 162 cc2025-6
18. Mr. J. DAVISON

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty what was the highest figure reached in his Department for the employment of women prior to 1920 in the following civilian grades temporary typists and. shorthand typists; temporary clerks below the rank of junior administrative assistant; and temporary officers of junior administrative rank or over?

Commander EYRES-MONSELL

The total number of women employéd on the clerical staff of the Admiralty on the 11th November, 1918, was 3,720, which figure represents approximately the highest figure reached. It is not possible to classify this figure in the grades mentioned by the hon. Member without a detailed examination of the records of each member of the staff in question, which examination could only be undertaken by the diversion of staff from other urgent work.
