HC Deb 17 April 1923 vol 162 c1873
58. Major ENTWISTLE

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the number of commodities which are affected by the Order, dated the 15th February, 1923, made by the Treasury under Section 10 of the Finance Act, 1922; what was the number of transactions passing through the Customs in respect of such commodities during the year 1922; and what was the total amount of revenue derived from the duties under the Safeguarding of Industries Act levied on such-commodities during the said period?

Major BOYD-CARPENTER

As the headings of the Schedule to the Order in question are in general terms, it is not possible to enumerate the particular commodities which may be affected, or to furnish the information sought by the.second and third parts of the question.

Major ENTWISTLE

Is the hon. Gentleman not aware that the information sought for would reveal the absolute futility of the Safeguarding of Industries Act?
