HC Deb 17 April 1923 vol 162 cc1843-4
2. Commander BELLAIRS

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he can make a statement as to the route of the new Pacific cable; in what way will it be linked with the American cable to Honolulu; and when it is to be put in hand?

The POSTMASTER-GENERAL (Sir William Joynson-Hicks)

I have been asked to reply. The Pacific Cable Board are now laying new cables between Suva (Fiji) and Auckland, and between Sydney and Southport (Queensland). No decision has yet been taken regarding the duplication of the cable north of Fiji.

asked the president of the Board of Trade the amount of spirits cleared from Nassau, Bahamas, to St. John, New Brunswick, to St. Pierre Miquelon, and to Tampico, Mexico, in the years 1913 and 1922, respectively?

Commander BELLAIRS

Will the hon. Gentleman make representations as to the desirability of linking the route with Honolulu?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

I will certainly see that the representations are conveyed.
