HC Deb 17 April 1923 vol 162 cc2014-6

Motion made, and Question proposed, That this House do now adjourn"— [Colonel Leslie Wilson.]

Mr. J. JONES

I should like to raise the question of the agricultural dispute in Norfolk with a view to ascertaining whether the Minister of Agriculture is exercising any influence to bring this unfortunate dispute to a settlement. The House will remember that the building trade dispute has been settled by the intervention of Members of this House, and the men and masters have agreed to certain methods of procedure in the direction of securing a settlement. I should like to ask, therefore, if the Minister of Agriculture has taken any steps to try to bring about a settlement of the agricultural dispute, and, if so, what is the situation now existing?

The MINISTER of AGRICULTURE (Sir Robert Sanders)

I had no notice that this matter would be brought forward.

Mr. JONES

I thought I would bring it forward.

Sir R, SANDERS

The last step that the Ministry took was to get two gentlemen to go down, to bring the parties together again, and try to arrive at an agreement. They met again last Thursday, but I regret to say that they did not arrive at an agreement, although the difference between the two parties seems to be a very small one. That, I am afraid, is all that I can say.

Mr. JONES

Has the right hon. Gentleman taken any further steps since' last Thursday?

Question put, and agreed to.

Adjourned accordingly at Three Minutes after Eleven o' Clock
