HC Deb 12 April 1923 vol 162 cc1301-2
68. Mr. SHINWELL

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he can state the actual cost of administration for old age pensions during the last financial year?

Major BOYD - CARPENTER

The approximate cost to the Exchequer of administration for old age pensions during the last financial year was £784,000.

69. Sir CHARLES CAYZER

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will state or ascertain the exact cost to the State of granting the full old age pension in all cases where the maximum income does not exceed £52 per year; whether ho is aware that this limited concession would be of the greatest value to the aged; and whether, in view of the existence of a surplus, he will keep before him the possibility of taking action to help a class which merits general sympathy?

Major BOYD-CARPENTER

I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer given to my hon. Friend the Member fog Barrow-in-Furness on the 6th March, of which I am sending him a copy.
