§ 49. Mr. R. DAVIESasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what progress has been made by the Committee considering the method of making State grants to local authorities, and when the Committee may be in a position to issue its report?
§ Mr. BALDWINI understand that the Committee have taken evidence from "Government Departments and others concerned. The meetings of the Committee have been interrupted by the General Election, but are being resumed immediately. There remains a considerable amount of evidence to be taken from representatives of local authorities, and J think it is too early to say by what date they will be able to report.
§ Mr. DAVIESDoes the right hon. Gentleman understand that several local 894 authorities will not be in a position to make up their estimates until they know the result of this Committee's deliberations?
§ Mr. BALDWINI can assure the hon. Member that this Committee is expediting its work as far as possible.
