HC Deb 04 May 1922 vol 153 c1548
41. Mr. RENDALL

asked the Home Secretary the number of men in His Majesty's prisons who are there for failing to pay maintenance, under magistrates' orders, to wives; and whether many of these men are continuously in and out of prison for the same reason?

Mr. SHORTT

I cannot give the total number now in prison nor the number who have been committed for this cause more than once, but in 1920 the total number so committed was 2,920.
