Mr. HANNONasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the estimated amount of taxation per head, including rates, which will be payable by the inhabitants of Great Britain during the current financial year; what was the corresponding amount during the financial years 1913–14 and 1919–20; what is the average amount of taxation, Imperial, State, and municipal, in Germany, in marks, in the same three financial years; and what is the equivalent in sterling, converted at the present rate of exchange and at the rate of exchange which represents the ratio between the level of wholesale prices in both countries?

§ The sterling equivalent of the taxation per head in Germany in 1922–23 at the 541 present rate of exchange (1,430 marks to £1) would be £1 2s. 6d. On the basis of relative wholesale prices in Germany (6,355) and Great Britain (164.1). In April, 1922, the sterling equivalent would be £2 0s. 5d.
