Mr. GILBERTasked the Minister of Health whether any women inspectors of his Department are employed in visiting private schools in various parts of the country; if so, will he state what are the duties of such inspectors on such school visits; how many of his inspectors are employed on this work; what is the approximate yearly cost; and whether these inspections are made under any arrangements with the Board of Education?
§ Sir A. MONDThe only private schools inspected by six women inspectors of my Department are schools which receive children chargeable to the Poor Law authorities. There are 217 schools certified under the Poor Law Certified Schools Act, 1862, for this purpose. They are usually in the nature of small orphanages. The inspection is directed to the administration of the schools and the general well-being of the children. The educational side of the work is inspected by officers of the Board of Education. I regret that it is not possible to give the approximate annual cost of this part of the work of the officers in question.
