Notwithstanding anything contained in this Act, or the adoption of this Act by any local authority, the Superannuation (Metropolis) Act, 1866, shall continue to apply and have effect in the case of officers or servants in the service on the appointed day of any local authority to which the said Act of 1866 applies, and any such officer or servant shall not be deemed to be an officer or servant for the purposes of the Act: Provided that at any time within six months after the appointed day such officer may signify in writing to the clerk to such local authority his desire to become an officer or servant for the purposes of this Act, and thereupon the said Act of 1866 shall cease to apply in the case of such officer or servant as from the appointed day, and such officer or servant shall be deemed to be and to have been an officer or servant for the purposes of this Act,
