HC Deb 18 July 1922 vol 156 c1910
63. Mr. CAIRNS

asked the Minister of Labour if he will consider the possibility of further reducing the number of unemployed by tree planting or road making, and by undertaking other public works?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of LABOUR (Sir Montague Barlow)

Local authorities were recently invited by circular letters issued by the Unemployment Grants Committee and the Ministry of Transport (of which I am sending copies to my hon. Friend) to submit further schemes of road and other public work, which might be undertaken with Government assistance during the autumn and winter of 1922–23. The question of the provision of further sums of money for schemes of tree planting is at present under consideration.
