HC Deb 06 July 1922 vol 156 cc554-5
14. Lieut-Colonel MOORE-BRABAZON

asked the Secretary of State for Air whether the meteorological information now sent out by the Air Ministry in Morse could be changed to telephony, in order that the information might be interpreted more easily by farmers and others equipped with receiving apparatus?

The SECRETARY of STATE for AIR (Captain GUEST)

The telephonic transmission would be additional to, and not in place of, the present telegraphic transmission in Morse, which is necessary under international arrangements. The cost of such a duplicate service would involve a capital expenditure of £5,000 and an annual upkeep of about £1,500. The provision of such a service will be considered when funds are available.

Lieut.-Colonel MOORE-BRABAZON

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that there are such telephonic reports to-day sent out from Paris?

Captain GUEST

Yes, I am aware of that fact, but am not responsible for the way the French get their money.
