61. Sir F. HALLasked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury what expenditure has been incurred up to the present in connection with the preparation of official histories in connection with the Great War; and if he will state what further expenditure will be required to complete the work?
§ Sir J. BAIRDThe total expenditure to 31st March last was £42,265. Two of the histories are approaching completion, but it is not possible at present to state the total expenditure required to complete the series.
Sir F. HALLWhat additional amount is required to complete these histories, and when will they be issued?
§ Sir J. BAIRDWe cannot pay this money without the sanction of the House. It must be done in the Votes, and I cannot give my hon. and gallant Friend any further information at the moment.
