HC Deb 13 February 1922 vol 150 cc603-4
55. Major C. LOWTHER

asked the Prime Minister whether the Spanish Government has addressed any representations to the British Government concerning French claims and policy with regard to Tangier; whether the French Government has made any communication to the British Government on the subject; and what is the policy of His Majesty's Government regarding that port and its status?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Mr. Cecil Harmsworth)

His Majesty's Government have been in constant communication with the French and Spanish Governments for many months past in regard to Tangier, and it is hoped that a Tripartite Conference will meet shortly in London to discuss the subject. The policy of His Majesty's Government remains, as it has been since 1912, in favour of placing Tangier and the adjoining district under some form of international administration.

Lieut.-Colonel J. WARD

Do we understand that the rights of the British Empire and its interests in Tangier, and also the rights of the Spanish Government, will not be given away to the French Government in the negotiations?

Mr. HARMSWORTH

I do not think that I can possibly add anything to the answer I have given.
