HC Deb 13 December 1922 vol 159 c2917
96. Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that many men will come under the gap system in payment of unemployment insurance benefits during Christmas week; and whether something pan be done to avoid this hardship to the men and their families at this time of the year?

Sir M. BARLOW

I would refer the hon. and gallant Member to the reply given on Monday to the hon. Member for Rochdale, in which it is explained that no "gap" period arises at Christmas.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that there are certain men who will come under the gap regulation, which Will end just before Christmas, so that they will spend that week without anything at all?

Sir M. BARLOW

It has been my business to inquire into that very carefully, and I assure my hon. Friend that I think that that is not so. If he likes to consult me afterwards I will give my reasons.
