Colonel NEWMANasked the President of the Board of Education whether he is aware that the supply of qualified teachers is now greater than is the demand for their services; and, having regard to the cost to the taxpayer which their training has necessitated, what relief to the taxpayer under this head can be anticipated in the next financial year?
§ Major BARNSTONThe question of the supply of teachers is receiving careful consideration. I anticipate that the sum which will be required for the training of teachers in the next financial year will be less than the sum required in the current year or last year, but I cannot make any definite statement in anticipation of the Board's Estimates.
§ Mr. A. V. ALEXANDERMay it not be that the supply of teachers is too large at present because of the Government policy in enlarging classes and not giving the children in elementary schools proper education?
