HC Deb 06 December 1922 vol 159 c1756
47. Mr. D. SOMERVILLE

asked the Prime Minister whether he proposes to permit this House to discuss the proposed changes in holding the assizes in the provinces before any definite action is taken thereon: and whether he is aware of the differences of opinion on the subject?

The PRIME MINISTER

I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer given by my right hon. Friend the Attorney-General to the hon. Member for Bodmin (Mr. Foot) on the 30th of last month. Until the Committee which has been appointed to consider the question has reported, it is not possible to say what changes, if any, will be proposed in the system, and whether it will be necessary to discuss the matter in this House. The answer to the last part of the question is in the affirmative.
