HC Deb 26 October 1920 vol 133 cc1548-9
39. Viscount CURZON

asked the Home Secretary how many police controls were in operation in the Metropolitan police area for timing motor vehicles exceeding the speed limit between a.m. 23rd October and p.m. 25th October; how many controls for detecting cases of driving to the common danger; how many police officers were employed; and how many cases resulted from each class of control, respectively?

Mr. SHORTT

One police control was operated in the Metropolitan Police area for timing motor vehicles exceeding the speed limit between a.m. 23rd October and p.m. 25th October; three police officers were employed, and three cases were reported for prosecution. There were no controls in operation solely to detect cases of dangerous driving during the week-end. They are dealt with when detected by police engaged on other street duties.

Sir F. HALL

Does the right hon. Gentleman not think the time has arrived when, at all events, there might be given a little more attention to the requirements of the users of motor traffic, or, at all events, that the 20 miles limit in many cases in the country might be abolished?

Mr. SHORTT

I should like notice of that.
