HC Deb 20 October 1920 vol 133 cc918-9
40. Mr. MALONE

asked the Prime Minister when the Government may be expected to announce its proposals in regard to the future government of Egypt?

Mr. BONAR LAW

As the hon. Member is aware, the mission which, under Lord Milner, has been investigating the Egyptian question held during the summer conversations with Saghloul Pasha and other Egyptian gentleman. As a result of these conversations, certain heads of agreement were reached which, in the opinion of Lord Milner's mission and of the Egyptian delegation, might form the basis of a treaty between this country and Egypt. Four of Saghloul Pasha's associates then returned to Egypt in order to ascertain the opinion of their fellow-countrymen on the terms of the proposed agreement, which are meanwhile receiving the most careful consideration of His Majesty's Government.

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

Is it possible to lay papers in regard to the negotiations?

Mr. BONAR LAW

I think it would be premature to do so. The whole subject is now being considered by the Government.
