HC Deb 06 May 1920 vol 128 c2226
42. Lieut.-Colonel WHELER

asked the Prime Minister whether he can make any statement as to the length of time for which it is proposed to continue the Ministry of Food?

Mr. BONAR LAW

A Bill for the extension of the life of the Ministry of Food will be shortly introduced. It is impossible, in view of the uncertainty of the economic conditions of the world, to make any definite forecast as to the period during which it may be necessary to continue the work of the Ministry of Food. We shall not continue it any longer than appears necessary in the interests of the public, but we are satisfied that that time has not yet arrived.

Sir R. COOPER

Will the right hon. Gentleman have inquiry made as to whether, if the Ministry is to be continued, it cannot be continued at a quarter the cost which now prevails?

Mr. BONAR LAW

The question of cost has already been most carefully investigated.

Lieut.-Colonel WHELER

May I ask whether the Bill will be introduced soon?

Mr. BONAR LAW

Yes, it must be.
