HC Deb 06 May 1920 vol 128 cc2233-4
70. Mr. R. McNEILL

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will consider whether public utility companies, such as gas and water companies, should be excluded from the scope of the proposed corporation tax, seeing that they are under statutory restrictions in regard to their charges and are therefore distinguishable in principle from ordinary profit-making limited liability companies?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I am not, as at present advised, prepared to entertain the suggestion contained in the question, but the point can be raised, if necessary, in Committee on the Finance Bill.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

Do not railway companies in this and other countries come under the same disabilities as statutory companies?
