HC Deb 03 May 1920 vol 128 cc1703-4
58. Captain BROWN

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture whether he has approved of the purchase of 2,000 acres in Hexhamshire of land over 500 feet above the sea level and eight miles from the nearest station for settling ex-service men; and what means of cheap transport is being supplied for the large quantities of fertilisers which must be applied to render this land sufficiently fertile to give the scheme any hope of success?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD OF AGRICULTURE (Sir Arthur Boscawen)

The Ministry has approved the acquisition for the settlement of ex-service men of 1,875 acres in Hexhamshire, the property being situate about six miles from Hexham. The development of this land, including all questions of transport, is now under consideration of the Northumberland County Council in consultation with this Ministry and the Ministry of Transport.

Lieutenant-Colonel MURRAY

Can the right hon. Gentleman say where the County of Hexhamshire is?

Sir A. BOSCAWEN

I believe it is near Hexham.
