HC Deb 23 March 1920 vol 127 c251
88. Mr. ALLEN PARKINSON

asked the Secretary to the Board of Trade whether the exportable surplus of 2,700,000 metric tons of wheat in Australia and New Zealand has been bought by His Majesty's Government, either through the Wheat Commission or otherwise; and what arrangements have been made for bringing it to this country?

Mr. PARKER

I have been asked to reply. Of the total exportable surplus of Australian wheat the quantity available for the United Kingdom amounts approximately to 1,500,000 tons, and it has already been purchased by the Royal Commission on Wheat Supplies on behalf of His Majesty's Government. The arrangements that have been made for shipment will, it is hoped, ensure the arrival of the entire quantity during the current cereal year. New Zealand has no exportable surplus, but is, on the contrary, an importer of wheat.
