HC Deb 23 March 1920 vol 127 cc241-2
51. Major WHELER

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether there has been any alteration in the allowances for travelling made to civil servants when travelling on Government duty; and whether he will consider the desirability of reducing the allowance to the level of a third-class railway fare in many cases where allowance for a first-class railway fare is now granted?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Mr. Baldwin)

Apart from the temporary adjustment of subsistence allowances authorised by Treasury Circular of 27th February last, no alteration has been made in the allowances payable to Civil Servants when travelling on official business. The suggestion in the second part of the question will be carefully considered in connection with any general revision of the present travelling regulations.

Major WHELER

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that a large number of Members of this House travel third class, and, therefore, is there any reason why these Civil Servants should not travel third class?
