HC Deb 02 March 1920 vol 126 cc238-9
18. Mr. DOYLE

asked the Secretary of State for War if he can give the number of men, prior to the passing of the Military Service Act, who disposed of their businesses at a loss in order to serve the country; what was the average amount of the loss incurred; what steps, if any, have been taken to recoup such men as far as possible; if he will give the number of men who have been compensated, and the average amount given; and, in the event of no such compensation having been made, what allowance, over and above that granted to ex-service men generally, is being given to these ex-business men?

Mr. CHURCHILL

I regret that I have no information as to the first and second parts of this question. The Military Service (Civil Liabilities) Committee was set up to give assistance in such cases, and as regards the remaining parts of the question I would refer my hon. Friend to my right hon. Friend the Minister of Labour.
