HC Deb 28 June 1920 vol 131 cc8-9
12. Commander Viscount CURZON

asked the Minister of Transport whether any expert examination and test of drivers of heavy public service and utility vehicles is required outside the Metropolitain area; and, if not, will he take steps in any future amendment of the Motor Car Acts to ensure that the drivers of all motor vehicles shall undergo such a test before being granted a licence to drive?

Sir E. GEDDES

I am not aware that any expert examination and test of drivers of heavy motor vehicles is conducted outside the Metropolitan area. The proposal in the second part of the question presents obvious difficulties, but I am awaiting a Report by the Departmental Committee dealing with this among other subjects.

Viscount CURZON

Has the attention of the right hon. Gentleman been drawn to a very serious accident to one of these heavy vehicles, and will he investigate the matter with reference to the question on the Paper?

Sir E. GEDDES

No; my attention has not been drawn to it.

Sir HARRY BRITTAIN

Is there any necessity for a periodic examination as to the reliability of the brakes of these vehicles?

Sir E. GEDDES

I should like notice of that question.
