HC Deb 17 June 1920 vol 130 c1443
43. Sir HENRY CRAIK

asked the Prime Minister whether the Government, in view of the heavy responsibilities of the Secretary for Scotland, and the importance of his office in the interests of Scotland, is prepared to raise that office so as to equal in status and emoluments that of a Secretary of State?

The PRIME MINISTER

I can add nothing to what the Leader of the House said on the 22nd April last, in reply to a question by my right hon. Friend the Member for Kirkcaldy.

Sir H. CRAIK

Is my right hon. Friend aware of the strong feeling existing in Scotland with regard to the present position, which is regarded as adverse to the interests of the country?

The PRIME MINISTER

My right hon. Friend knows very well that the Government made an attempt to comply with the wishes of Scottish Members, and their effort was not very favourably received.

Captain W. BENN

Did not the Government take advantage at that time of a perfectly legitimate desire to raise the status of a number of other Ministries?

The PRIME MINISTER

No doubt there was the same legitimate desire in respect of other Ministries.
