HC Deb 14 June 1920 vol 130 c880
39. Mr. J. GUEST

asked the Prime Minister if he is aware that owing to the high cost of living, the present rate of 10s. per week for old age pensioners is totally inadequate to maintain a reasonable standard of life, many of them suffering from want; and whether the Government are prepared to deal with this matter at an early date?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Mr. Baldwin)

My right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer is not prepared to introduce further legislation for raising old age pensions, which were increased as recently as December last.

Mr. GUEST

Would it be possible for the Chancellor of the Exchequer to divert the sum proposed to be spent on new uniforms to the service of the old people?
