§ 23. Major GLYNasked the Minister of Transport whether he has obtained the opinion of the Chairmen and Boards of Directors of the Scottish railway companies in regard to the proposals of the Ministry of Transport to group Scottish railways; whether he is aware of the particular difficulties that affect the operating of certain Scottish railways; whether, in the opinion of the Ministry, Scottish railway management has been backward in the past; and whether he intends to force upon Scotland a scheme that is neither desired nor welcomed without detailed consultation with Scottish railway companies?
§ Sir E. GEDDESThe Government proposals for the railways in Scotland, as in the rest of the country, will be discussed with the railway companies and with other interests concerned. The particular circumstances of Scotland are appreciated, and no suggestion is involved that 1936 the management of Scottish railways is more backward than that of others, though the general disabilities under which railways are operated apply to Scotland as to the rest of the country.
§ 24. Major GLYNasked the Minister of Transport what schemes, if any, have been receiving the consideration of the Development Department of the Ministry of Transport, which have been submitted by Scottish railway companies, by the Board of Agriculture in Scotland, or on the initiation of the Ministry of Transport, for the betterment of transport both of light and normal-gauge railways in Scotland?
§ Sir E. GEDDESSo far as rural areas are concerned, I am working upon the recommendations of the Rural Transport (Scotland) Committee. The numerous schemes put forward by that Committee have been under consideration by the Secretary for Scotland, who has made recommendations thereon. The schemes which appear to be the most pressing are being investigated in detail in conjunction with the other Departments of State concerned.
§ Major GLYNMay I ask whether any decision has been taken with regard to the money subsidy for fish traffic at Mallaig?
§ Sir E. GEDDESI cannot speak without reference. Perhaps the hon. and gallant Member will put down a question.
