HC Deb 23 February 1920 vol 125 cc1290-1
38. Mr. A. HERBERT

asked whether after it had authorised the Greek landing at Smyrna in May, the Supreme Council was warned that, as a consequence, massacres of Armenians would follow, and what steps have been taken to prevent such massacres?

Mr. BONAR LAW

It is not known here whether any such warning reached the Supreme Council. Every possible protection has been extended to the various Armenian communities in Asiatic Turkey. Put the united forces of the Allies have been insufficient to secure it in every district.

Mr. HERBERT

Will my right hon. Friend consider the advisibility of publishing the report of the committee of inquiry into what has happened at Smyrna?

Mr. BONAR LAW

I shall consider that suggestion.

Captain W. BENN

Was not there a British warship lying at Smyrna, and were forces landed?

Mr. BONAR LAW

I would like notice of that question.
