HC Deb 28 April 1920 vol 128 c1191
11. Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

asked the Secretary of State for India, whether the pensions of members of the Indian Civil Service and officers of the Indian Army are guaranteed by the British Government.

Mr. MONTAGU

I would refer the hon. Baronet to Section 36 (3) of the Government of India Act of last year. The pensions and annuities of both the services to which the hon. Baronet refers have been fixed by despatch, regulation or rule. They have not been and they are not threatened. They cannot be altered by any authority in India, and whatever may be forthcoming in the future, I am certain that Parliament can be trusted to take every step necessary to ensure the fulfilment of the conditions of service fixed on its behalf by the Secretary of State in Council.
