HC Deb 20 April 1920 vol 128 c229
60. Viscount CURZON

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Shipping Controller what has been the cost of the salvage of wrecks salved since the Armistice; what has been the cost of repairing and reconditioning these ships; what is the policy of the Ministry of Shipping with regard to these ships; and on how many ships are salvage operations now proceeding?

Commander EYRES-MONSELL (Treasurer of the Household—for Colonel Wilson)

The amount spent to date on salvage of wrecks salved since the Armistice is about £115,000, but there are many accounts still to come in. The cost of repairs and reconditioning in cases where vessels have been repaired by the Ministry is not yet available. The policy of the Ministry is to spend as little as possible on these wrecks and to dispose of them as soon as possible. Salvage operations are proceeding on six ships.
