HC Deb 14 April 1920 vol 127 cc1649-50
6. Mr. WATERSON

asked the Secretary of State for India if he is aware that a representative provincial conference that met on 2nd April at Jullundur, the Punjab, expressed great concern at conditions of insecurity of life and property in border districts and in the North-West Frontier Province; and if he will enlighten the House as to the steps that he is taking to protect life and property in those districts?

Mr. MONTAGU

I have received no report of the proceedings at the conference referred to. The hon. Member is aware that military operations are in progress for the purpose of restoring order, and he may rest assured that conditions on the border are engaging the active attention of the Government of India.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that this question refers also to Baluchistan, where, apparently, Indian life and property are not safe at the present time?

Mr. MONTAGU

I was not aware of the geographical area to which it refers.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

I have sent the right hon. Gentleman a letter about it today.
