HC Deb 29 October 1919 vol 120 cc655-6
44. Major NALL

asked whether the Appointments Department is a temporary institution designed to help demobilised officers back into civil life or whether it is intended to create it on a permanent basis?

The MINISTER of LABOUR (Sir Robert Horne)

The Appointment's Department is a temporary institution, whose main function may be summarised as that of assisting in the resettlement of ex-officers and men whose qualifications lie in the direction of the professions or commerce. I cannot say how long the Department will continue; but there is no -intention of maintaining it on anything other than a temporary basis.

Major NALL

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the Department is causing those employers who apply for ex-Service men to get applications from men who are in work, and that applications are coming in from men employed by the Port of London Authority and various town councils?

Sir R. HORNE

I am afraid I do not follow the hon. Member's question, but know of nothing such as be suggests.
