HC Deb 19 November 1919 vol 121 c900
21. Mr. NEIL MACLEAN

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that Joseph Shannon, No. 348804, 16th G.H.A. Res. M.T. Company, held shares in a company which went into liquidation as a result of the War; whether Shannon had to pay £31 5s. towards the composition; whether he has made application to the Military Service (Civil Liabilities) Department for £31 5s. to assist him in starting business, and has been refused; and whether he is prepared to recommend a reconsideration of their decision?

Mr. WARDLE

I am aware of the circumstances of this case. Though the liquidation of the company in question was no doubt a result of the War, it does not, on the facts before me, appear to have occurred by reason of Mr. Shannon's personal service in the Army. This being so, the case is not one in which the Civil Liabilities Department have any authority to make a grant, and I am afraid the decision already given must stand.
