HC Deb 19 November 1919 vol 121 cc910-1
45. Mr. GWYNNE

asked the Prime Minister whether he would give a definite assurance that, in the case of agricultural districts where it was impossible to obtain an economic rent on the basis of Schedule B to the Housing (Assisted Scheme) Regulations, 1919, in respect of houses built by a rural district council under a scheme submitted in accordance with Section 1 of the Housing, Town Planning, etc., Act, 1919, the burden which should fall upon the rural district should in no circumstances, either before or after 1927, exceed a rate of 1d. in the £, provided that due economy was observed and that the houses were let at such rents, whether in accordance with the requirements of Schedule B above mentioned or otherwise, as could reasonably be obtained?

The MINISTER of HEALTH (Dr. Addison)

The answer is in the affirmative.

Mr. GWYNNE

Will the right hon. Gentleman say, in view of the Regulations which are now on the Table becoming law on Friday, how he intends to give effect to his promise? Does he intend to amend the Regulations?

Dr. ADDISON

I do not think it is necessary to amend them. The period expires on Monday, and not on Friday, They do embody the assurance I have given.

Mr. GWYNNE

How does the right hon. Gentleman expect lawyers to interpret his answer as against the printed Regulations?

Dr. ADDISON

I am now considering whether any supplementary statement can be issued or should be issued. I think it is perfectly clear in the Regulations, but I am prepared to issue a supplementary statement if necessary.
