HC Deb 17 November 1919 vol 121 cc624-5
83. Brigadier-General PALMER

asked the Minister of Health if he is aware that the authorities of Dorsetshire are proposing to use a house in Warminster, in the centre of Wiltshire, as a tubercular sanatorium; and if he intends to sanction such proposal against the wish of the people of Warminster, and in the face of the fact that Dorsetshire is as healthy, or more so, than Wiltshire for the purpose?

Dr. ADDISON

The property referred to in the question has been presented to the Dorset County Council for use as a tuberculosis sanatorium and has been inspected by one of the medical officers of the Ministry. I am advised that the property is suitable for the treatment of tuberculosis, and that its use for that purpose will be in no way detrimental to the neighbourhood. I have accordingly approved the proposal of the county council.

Brigadier-General PALMER

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the patients have to carry flasks about with them to expectorate into?

Sir E. CARSON

Is there not a great need for erecting a number of these sanatoria, and ought not the greatest facilities be granted?

Dr. ADDISON

I am obliged to the right hon. Gentleman for asking that question. If I were to take notice of objections in every case we should never have any sanatoria at all.
