asked the Prime Minister if, with a view to getting rid of the long interval between the casting and the counting of votes at an election, he could arrange that men at present serving abroad on land or sea should be given the opportunity of nominating someone as proxy, and that all those detailed for service abroad in future should be given this opportunity before leaving the country?

The subject raised in this question has been carefully investigated by the representatives of the Departments concerned, and, as at present advised, the Government are not prepared to recommend any alteration of the existing system.
