HC Deb 17 November 1919 vol 121 cc621-2
79. Mr. MACMASTER

asked the First Commissioner of Works how far the buildings constructed during the War in parks and public places and used as offices are now vacated; for what purposes the vacated buildings are now used; what use will be made of those to be vacated in future; and whether many of these office buildings can be now used either to release commandeered hotels or as temporary residences or lodging places for the people now in need of and demanding such accommodation?

The FIRST COMMISSIONER of WORKS (Sir Alfred Mond)

The policy of my Department since the signing of the Armistice has been to concentrate staffs in temporary buildings in order to release more important accommodation, such as hotels, museums, and galleries, requisitioned business offices, etc. This process is still continuing, and the whole of the temporary buildings in the parks and public spaces are at present in use for the accommodation of Government staffs, and will be required for that purpose for a considerable further period.

Sir P. MAGNUS

Can the right hon. Gentleman say when the buildings of the Imperial Institute and the great part of that institute now occupied by the London University are likely to be vacated?

Sir A. MOND

I hope by the commencement of February.
