HC Deb 06 November 1919 vol 120 cc1679-80
73 Mr. A. WILLIAMS

asked the President of the Board of Education whether the minute fixing £65 per annum as the minimum rate of salary for an uncertificated teacher employed in a public elementary school will now be modified; and, if not, whether it is considered that an elementary teacher can live on half the wages of an unskilled labourer?

The PRESIDENT of the BOARD of EDUCATION (Mr. Fisher)

I understand that the question of the minimum initial salaries of certificated and uncertificated teachers is now under consideration by the Standing Joint Committee which has been established by the Associations of Local Education Authorities and the National Union of Teachers. Before amending the minute in question, I think it would be best to await the result of the deliberations of that committee.
