HC Deb 06 November 1919 vol 120 c1669
55. Sir A. FELL

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the sale of sugar at present controlled prices was en tailing a heavy loss on 'the Exchequer; and whether provision had been made for this in the Estimates recently laid upon the Table?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

Under the arrangements now made no loss to the Exchequer on sugar is anticipated in the present year.

Sir A. FELL

If the Treasury stands behind the Food Controller is there not a possibility of heavy loss on these dealings in food by the Government? Is there not a possibility of the Budget being affected?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

That we are carefully avoiding. The hon. Member's question was about sugar, and the arrangement made recently for the increase of price was intended to prevent, and, I hope, will prevent, any charge to the Exchequer during the current year.
