HC Deb 06 November 1919 vol 120 cc1670-1
59. Sir FRANCIS LOWE

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he can say how many tons of anthracite coal have been exported from this country during the last three months, and the price per ton at which it has been sold?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

The quantity of anthracite coal exported from the United Kingdom during the last three months was as follows:

  • In August, 141,990 tons, at an average price of 44s. 5d. per ton.
  • In September, 165,969 tons, at an average price of 44s. 3d. per ton.
  • In October, 152,481 tons, at an average price of 48s. 6d. per ton.

60. Sir F. LOWE

asked in what way the increased demand for anthracite coal during the last three months has interfered with facilities for its transport, having regard to the fact that there have been no supplies to meet even the normal demand?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

The normal supply of anthracite for home consumption has been maintained during the past three months, the average weekly quantity being about 40,000 tons out of an output of about 80,000 tons. There has, however, recently been a markedly increased inland demand and the difficulty has been to secure transport inland for the increased quantity required. Special arrangements have been made to work anthracite into the London area both by rail and sea, and it is hoped that a supply equal to the new demand may be maintained.

Sir F. LOWE

Is it not the fact that no one can get anthracite in London?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

I have heard a great many complaints.

Sir F. LOWE

That being so, I cannot see how the demand for it interferes with its transport—
