HC Deb 22 May 1919 vol 116 cc566-7
60. Captain LOSEBY

asked the Lord Privy Seal if he is aware that the increase in the cost of living has made the position of many Members of Parliament extremely difficult; and if he is prepared to recommend without further delay free railway passes to and from their constituencies, or any other concessions which will facilitate the carrying out of their present arduous duties?

Mr. BONAR LAW

As I promised yesterday, I shall give consideration to my hon. Friend's suggestion.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

Will the right hon. Gentleman consider giving this privilege to local councillors?

Mr. BONAR LAW

I do not think that is a suggestion which will help.

Major E. WOOD

When will my right hon. Friend be in a position to make a definite statement?

Mr. BONAR LAW

Of course, I must consult the Government in the matter, and that will take time; but there is no object in undue delay.

Mr. WHITE

Will the right hon. Gentleman receive a small deputation of Members who are suffering very acutely in this matter?

Mr. BONAR LAW

As a matter of fact, I have promised to see some Members of the House on the subject this afternoon.

Mr. RAFFAN

Would the right hon. Gentleman endeavour to make a statement before the Whitsuntide holidays?
