HC Deb 22 May 1919 vol 116 cc535-6
2. Colonel YATE

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether passports to Jersey and the Channel Islands are still necessary; and, if so, for what reason?

The PARLIAMENTARY UNDERSECRETARY for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Mr. Cecil Harmsworth)

Under the Defence of the Realm Regulations passengers to all places outside the United Kingdom must be in possession of passports. This includes the Channel Islands. I would add, however, that passports for the Islands are issued freely on application.

Major Sir BERTRAM FALLE

When will the censorship be abolished in these islands?

Mr. HARMSWORTH

Perhaps the hon. Member will give me notice of that.

Colonel YATE

Would the right hon. Gentleman say what "freely" means? I know people who have applied for months and cannot get them.

Mr. HARMSWORTH

I understood they were given almost as a matter of course, but I will inquire.
